A protected area (PA) is a territorial unit which is protected by law, based on a special management system, with the purpose of conserving the existing natural resources and biodiversity within the area.
The National Protected Areas System (SNUC) was created in Brazil in the year 2000, through law # 9,985. It established the criteria and rules for the protected areas creation, implementation and management.
According to IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature), protected areas are “a crucial contribution for global natural and cultural resources conservation”.
PAs have high value due to the protection they provide to natural habitats and their associated flora and fauna, as well as the environmental stability of the regions in their surroundings.
Protected areas may offer opportunities for rural development and rational use in the surroundings, while generating income and jobs, for research and monitoring, for education on conservation, recreation and tourism”.
